SunPower Corp. (Nasdaq: SPWR) has finished installing the first of seven solar-power systems for Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) at one of the retailer’s California locations, according to an announcement made today.
The 390-kilowatt system has been installed at a Sam’s Club store in Chino. The seven systems will have a total annual generating capacity of 4.6 megawatts.
Wal-Mart installed the SunPower system using the solar-product maker’s Access program, which allows entities to purchase solar electricity through a long-term agreement instead of purchasing the systems to be installed.
Each solar power generating system installed may vary, but on average it can provide up to 30% of the power for the store on which it is installed, the companies said. "By Wal-Mart’s estimates, installing the solar power systems will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8,000-10,000 metric tons per year," said David Ozment, director of energy for Wal-Mart. He added that the solar power pilot project is a major step toward Wal-Mart’s goal of being supplied 100% by renewable energy.
Wal-Mart says it has plans to install solar panels at about 22 of its stores and distribution centers in Hawaii and California.
