The Italian energy company Eni announced a new partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, through which it will fund advanced solar technology research over the next five years.
Total funding, according to a company release will be for $50 million, half of which will establish teh Eni-MITEI Solar Frontiers Research Program. The other $25 million will support a range of energy research projects at the institute.
Eni also will support ten "Eni-MIT Energy Fellows" at the Institute for each year of its five-year commitment.
The Eni-MITEI Solar Frontiers Research Program will include six areas of focus:
- Nano-structured thin film photovoltaics
- Luminescent solar concentrators
- Self-assembling photovoltaic materials
- Water splitting
- Materials for solar energy capture and storage
- Maximizing the return on investment for solar thermal plants
