This week Dallas became the first major U.S city to launch a comprehensive standalone website dedicated exclusively to green initiatives.
GreenDallas.net offers tips on how to save energy and water; recycle; clean the air; and have a green home and lawn. The city’s environmental initiatives, accomplishments and awards are also prominently featured.
City officials say the website encourages Dallas residents to make a commitment to "go green" and play an active role in building a greener city.
"People understand how important it is to address the environmental issues, and they also understand that that’s the way to continue to build Dallas as a great place to live and a great place to do business," said Mayor Tom Leppert.
According to Laura Fiffick, the city’s Director of Environmental Quality, the website is an important step in providing environmental leadership for residents. "The City has to be a leader because we need to show our residents that we are committed to conserving water, recycling and reducing emissions if we expect residents to do these things. It’s really a one-stop shopping center for residents who want to become environmental leaders in their own community," Fiffick said.
One initiative highlighted on the site is a donation from Green Mountain Energy Company of 5,000 high-efficiency light bulbs. Dallas Fire-Rescue will distribute the bulbs as part of the smoke detector replacement program.
Clear Channel Inc. is also making an in-kind contribution of 25 billboards to spread the message about how Dallas residents can help build a greener City.
