To advance the growth of solar energy in New England, Borrego Solar Systems is bringing its grid-connected design and installation services to Massachusetts.
"Opening an office in the northeast has been a major objective of Borrego Solar since the beginning, and a key step toward our goal of making solar energy an accessible, affordable and effective alternative for homeowners and businesses all across the country. Solar power is now as viable an alternative for the east coast as it has become in the west," states Chris Anderson, Chief Operations Officer and co-owner, who has moved to the region to oversee the expansion.
Borrego Solar is working with Evergreen Solar, Inc., headquartered in Marlboro, Massachusetts, to bring the latest in photovoltaic technology to the Northeastern United States. Evergreen Solar manufactures solar wafers, cells and panels with its proprietary String Ribbon" wafer technology. String Ribbon" modules are extremely efficient, use less silicon, and produce a lower carbon footprint than other silicon production techniques.
This is an important turning point for solar power in the region: the state of Massachusetts has made significant strides by providing financial incentives for all sizes of installations. The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) is accepting grant applications for residential, commercial, industrial, and public solar energy projects between now and August 21, 2007.
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick is a solid proponent of solar power, supporting growth from the state’s current 2 megawatts of solar energy to 250 megawatts by 2017. Borrego Solar plans to be a leader in helping achieve the goal, which will require an additional average of 25 megawatts of installed solar per year. Governor Patrick has also backed state assistance for Evergreen Solar to build a manufacturing plant in Devens that will result in over 350 new solar jobs, more than doubling Evergreen Solar’s Massachusetts employment.
Joining Anderson to lead new market expansion is Brendan Neagle, Vice President of Business Development. "We’re excited to be opening an office in Massachusetts, and to be working with Evergreen Solar as part of our goal to offer new technologies that provide customers greater value and increased sustainability," says Neagle, a fourth generation Worcester native.
Borrego Solar has completed and is currently working on several installations in Massachusetts, including a solar photovoltaic system for WXRV Boston "The River" radio station.
