A new survey shows that Americans want leaders to act immediately to change energy policies toward clean energy and energy independence.
Americans believe this it will be a boon for the economy, will create clean energy jobs, and that America should lead the way.
The survey concludes that 65% Of Americans are deeply dissatisfied with current energy policies and believe America has fallen behind the rest of the world on energy. Concern about energy and global warming now rivals health care as the top domestic issue that requires immediate action.
76% believe the effects of global warming are apparent now. 60% say the increased pollution over the past few decades has set global warming into motion and "we must take action now or it will be too late to stop it." Only 33% say the effects will not be evident for decades.
74% say we should move away from oil to alternative fuels. 71% say the most important thing to do is to quickly expand renewable energy sources and reduce the use of oil and coal.
59% Independents, 76% of Democrats and 41% of Republicans support action now.
The poll was conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research for the Center for American Progress.
