Biodiesel Plant to be Powered with Geothermal

Wabuska Nevada is home to the world’s first geothermally powered and heated biodiesel plant, run by Infinifuel Biodiesel. In addition to biodiesel production facilities, the site provides oilseed storage, crushing and pressing facilities. There are over 300 acres to grow oilseed and develop algae ponds on site.

The facility is home to the first geothermal power plant in Nevada. There are two production geothermal wells and seven power production units providing over 5 MW of electrical energy. In addition, the 220 degree steam will be used in the production of biodiesel on site.

The plant is in the final construction stage, with 17 stainless steel tanks in place, housed in and around a 5,000 sq. ft building and workshop/ lab facility. The facility currently has two biodiesel reactors with 22,000 gallon per day capacity. The plant will produce five million gallons per year of biodiesel.

Infinifuel has been working with the University of Nevada Reno Agricultural Extension to promote the planting of oilseed as a rotation crop with hay and alfalfa in Nevada. Nevada could position the state as the crushing center for the western US, and in doing so poise itself to be a major biofuel production location. The crushed hulls after oil extraction are a high protein feed that could benefit the state’s livestock. Infinifuel has also discussed the potential of algae as an oil crop with Desert Research Institute.
