Carmanah Technologies Inc. (TSX Venture: CMH) is has received an order for its solar-powered LED (light-emitting diode) aviation lights valued at $615,000.
This repeat order from the U.S. Marine Corps is for more than 1,000 units of the Company’s Model A601 and A702 airfield lights. These units will be used for taxiway edge, helipad edge, runway edge and obstruction lighting at the at the Marine Corps second largest air base in the Middle East. This base operates two large runways — one 12,000 and one 13,000 feet long — and both are using Carmanah’s technology for guiding fixed wing and rotary aircraft.
Since its official launch into aviation lighting in April 2003, Carmanah has quickly become a primary supplier of solar-powered LED lighting to military, commercial and private airfields worldwide. Customers include Chicago O’Hare, Memphis, Vancouver, Auckland and Milan international airports. The aviation industry is embracing Carmanah’s high-performance, maintenance- free solar technology because it is faster to install and less expensive than conventional hardwired lighting.
“Carmanah aviation lights are in use in over 80 countries. Our lights are quick to deploy and require no external power infrastructure. They are saving our customers literally millions of dollars in installation, operating and maintenance costs,” states Carmanah’s CEO, Art Aylesworth. “More importantly, with more than 20,000 units installed to date, our aviation products have field proven their high performance, reliability, and durability in the harshest of environmental conditions.”
Pilots have discovered an additional safety benefit. Carmanah’s LED-based lighting allows them to fly with night vision goggles (NVGs) without the “blooming” or blinding effect common with incandescent lights.
Many aviation facilities lack lighting due to the high costs of purchasing, installing and operating conventional lights. For example, half of the 14,000 general aviation airports in the U.S. lack permanent runway edge or taxiway lighting to guide pilots and prevent runway incursions.
Carmanah makes lighting affordable. In the winter of 2003-04, the Truckee Tahoe Airport in California installed 560 of Carmanah’s taxiway edge lights for a fraction of the cost of a hardwired system, saving US$850,000 in capital costs and an additional US$16,000 every year in electricity bills.
