Illinois Airport Announces RFP for Renewables-to-Hydrogen Project

Published on: November 15, 2004

The Greater Rockford Airport Authority has issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) for a hydrogen project that uses small- to medium-scale wind and solar to produce hydrogen at the Northwest Chicagoland Regional Airport in Rockford, Ill.

The hydrogen will provide fuel for airport vehicles as well as stationary heat and power to the fire station being developed on the airport. The qualified firm or team will provide planning, design services, and ongoing operational management for the project.

The RFQ states that the goal is to demonstrate the viability of using renewably produced hydrogen in an airport environment. "The airport of the future will be clean, efficient, and fuel independent," said Rockford Airport director Bob O'Brien. "I'm excited that we'll be the first airport in the world to demonstrate that renewable solar and wind energies can be successfully integrated into the transportation sector."

Teams or firms wishing to be considered for this project should go to http://www.ilcoalition.org and click on "Northwest Chicagoland Airport Renewable Hydrogen Project Overview and RFQ" to view the criteria and complete RFQ.

Applications are due by December 3 to Christopher Tynan at the Illinois Coalition: tynan@tskenergy.com

Respondents should be companies or teams capable of developing and managing the entire project. Interested parties unable to fulfill the entire project, but capable of subcontracting may submit a one paragraph description of capabilities and experience to Tynan by e-mail no later than November 15. A complete list of all interested subcontractors will be sent to all known respondents shortly thereafter.

The Illinois Coalition received a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation to develop Illinois' first hydrogen fueling station powered by renewable sources. The grant was matched by in-kind contributions from participant organizations including Illinois Institute of Technology, Aerotecture, Inc., Rock Valley College, and law firm Latham and Watkins. The project will be housed at Rockford's Greater Northwest Chicagoland Regional Airport and represents the Foundation's first investment in fuel cell technology.
