NEW YORK, Sept 2 (Reuters) – Global utility AES (AES.N: Quote, Profile, Research) will enter the wind power business by investing in projects in the eastern United States, the company said on Thursday. AES made an investment of "as much as $25 million" in US Wind Force, a privately held developer of wind projects, said spokeswoman Robin Pence. AES had 2003 sales of $8.4 billion.

US Wind Force handles wind farm development, including site selection, permitting and grid connection. It has wind projects in West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Total world wind capacity provides enough power for the equivalent of 9 million average U.S. homes, according to industry group the American Wind Energy Association.
