Excertped press release
Proton Energy Systems Inc., a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corp. (Nasdaq: DESC) and a leader in hydrogen generation and fuel cell technology and products, announced today the successful startup of the first of Proton's new HOGEN(R) H Series onsite hydrogen generator at Mirant Corp.'s Zeeland, MI power plant. Additionally, Proton announced the receipt of the first two commercial orders for the HOGEN H Series hydrogen generators.
The HOGEN H Series unit started up at the Zeeland plant within six hours of commissioning and ran smoothly the first day it was onsite.
The H Series unit at Zeeland is part of Proton's Customer Acceptance Program, which allows potential customers to experience a pre-production HOGEN H Series hydrogen generator onsite for a limited trial period with an option to buy once the trial is over.
Chip Schroeder, president of Distributed Energy Systems Corp., commented, "With the release and initial sales of our H Series product, Proton moves a major step toward commercial success."
In addition to the Zeeland installation, Proton received orders for two H Series hydrogen generators — one for a semiconductor producer and one for a commercial heat treat facility. These units, planned for delivery in the summer of 2004, are intended to replace merchant industrial gas deliveries.
Schroeder continued, "Our H Series product, building upon the solid platform of reliability and sales momentum achieved by our HOGEN 40 series generator team over the past year, offers compelling value against tube trailer delivered hydrogen in terms of both cost and safety. The H Series product significantly expands our commercial market reach. Targeted at today's $1 billion distributed market for industrial hydrogen, the H Series units, as well as our other products, are also well suited for tomorrow's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle fueling market."
Proton's HOGEN H Series generators produce ultra-pure hydrogen at process pressure, 24/7, at an output capacity ranging up to 240 standard cubic feet per hour at lower cost than cylinder or tube trailer gas. Dave Wolff, Proton's vice president of sales and marketing, acknowledges the significant user benefits of the HOGEN H Series hydrogen generators, the latest and most advanced of Proton's product line. "The HOGEN H Series generators combine the benefits of low cost onsite hydrogen generation with the elimination of hydrogen inventory, and the labor associated with ordering, receiving, moving and securing delivered gas. The H Series offers our customers a superior value in hydrogen supply."
