The smart grid will happen in the South when enough people are smart enough to clammer for it. Obviously there is savings for the both the consumer and the utility companies, so it’s a “win win” all around.
Oddly enough, Tasmania, Australia implemented smart meters about 25 years ago.
Customer’s rates for electricity are set by the time of day. Electricity is much cheaper during off peak and at night (50 percent discount) that encourages home owners to put their washers and dryers on timers and turn hot water heaters on at night.
