New York State Reaches 42 Percent Recycling Rate

“In little more than a decade, New York has gone from almost no recycling of our solid waste to recycling nearly half of the solid waste produced in the state,” Governor Pataki said when he announced that NY State had achieved its goal of recycling 42 percent by 1997.

Out of a total of 30 million tons of waste about 12.5 million tons were recycled
in 1997. Since 1988, New York state and local governments have invested almost
$150 million in waste reduction, recycling and household hazardous waste
management projects.
