Last year, China implemented a logging ban in nine of its major provinces which contain abundant natural forest resources. This year, the ban will be expanded three-fold, to 18 provinces with 1.2 million square kilometres of woodlands.
To meet China’s growing timber demand, 600,000-700,000 former loggers will be employed to plant about 6.7 million hectares of quick-growing, high-yield trees.
China’s forest cover is about half the world’s average, at 14 percent.
