The Vatican is considering building a 100-megawatt (MW) solar power plant at a cost of EUR 500 million, according to a Bloomberg report. If completed it would be the largest solar plant, by far, in Europe.
The power plant would be built on land owned by the Roman Catholic Church near the village of Santa Maria di Galeria, north of Rome.
The power plant would supply more than enough electricity to power Vatican City, and the remainder would be sold, according to the report.
In 2008, the Bonn, Germany-based solar company SolarWorld AG (SWV.DE) donated a $1.5 million rooftop photovoltaic plant that was installed at the Vatican. SolarWorld is consulting on the 100-MW project and has the inside track for the contract, according to the report.
