SunEdison, a division of MEMC Electronic Materials (NYSE: WFR), will construct up to fourteen roof-top solar photovoltaic projects with capacity totaling up to 3 megawatts (MW) for The Remington Group, a real estate developer in Ontario.
SunEdison will finance, build, own and operate the systems hosted at Remington facilities, and the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) will purchase the energy produced under the terms of Ontario’s Feed-in Tariff Program (FIT).
The fourteen systems will all be located in the Greater Toronto Area, and will be launched using a phased rollout plan starting in the summer of 2010.
The projects mark SunEdison’s first foray into Ontario, since the FIT supercharged the renewable energy industry there.
Earlier this month, the province announced 184 contracts for large-scale renewable projects that are expected to add up to 2,500 MW of clean energy to the portfolio of the Ontario Power Authority. The provincial government says the domestic content requirements in these projects will mean thousands of new renewable energy jobs and about $9 billion in private sector investment.
Ontario has pledged to phase out all coal-fired power by 2014.
