Solar Manufacturing: Canadian Solar and ECD Announcements

Canadian Solar (Nasdaq: CSIQ) expects to open one of North America’s largest solar manufacturing facilities in Ontario Canada early next year.

The 200-megawatts (MW) capacity facility will be located in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. It is expected to create about 500 local solar jobs.

The new facility will be Canadian Solar’s first feed-in-tariff domestic content compliant solar manufacturing facility in Ontario.

Energy Conversion Devices Outsources Module Assembly

In a separate announcement, thin-film manufacturer, Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: ENER) is shifting module assembly from its Auburn Hills, Michigan campus to its  Tijuana, Mexico facility in an effort to reduce costs.

The shift will take place this fall of 2010, and will result in the elimination of approximately 140 jobs.

ECD will continue to manufacture its solar cells in Auburn Hills.

Mark Morelli, ECD’s President and CEO, said, "We are aggressively reducing our cost structure to operate more effectively in the highly-competitive, global solar market, and, through these actions, we will better utilize our existing capacity in Tijuana, without any additional capital costs. Our Auburn Hills campus remains an essential part of our manufacturing footprint for our solar cells. In fact, we are now retrofitting one of our Auburn Hills manufacturing lines with our next generation technology, and we expect to have this retrofitted line in commercial production in the spring of 2011."
