Siemens (NYSE: SI) and Viridity Energy have entered into a strategic relationship to provide virtual power plant functionality on campus environments and to other large users of electricity.
Viridity will couple Siemens’ DEMS (decentralized energy management system) with its VPower(TM) system for forecasting and optimization to deliver solutions and services for the management and bidding of controllable load and customer-owned generation and storage resources into energy markets, including capacity, day-ahead, real-time and ancillary markets.
Audrey Zibelman, President and CEO Viridity Energy explained, "Electric utilities and electric customers are increasingly recognizing the value that distributed resources can have on the grid. This value can be maximized when customers are able to optimize individual load management and generation resources as integrated, dynamic resources on the grid. To provide this service to our customers, we wanted a base technology platform that was proven and was of the same quality as those that are used to manage resources on the power grid. The Siemens DEMS system was a ready-made solution to that requirement."
Viridity Energy was founded in 2008 by former executives of PJM Interconnection. Viridity’s flexible VPower(TM) system is a technology platform that turns customer supply and demand-side energy resources into integrated virtual power plants that are dispatched onto the energy grid through the wholesale power markets.
