Secrecy in the US Chemical Industry

Yesterday we reported that the US Environmental Protection Agency is adding to a "Chemicals of Concern" list in an effort to begin updating the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

An in-depth Washington Post story looks at the scope of toxic threats in the environment from 84,000 chemicals in commercial use in the US.

A federal policy designed to protect trade secrets in the chemical industry has been over-used in recent years, such that regulators, researchers and consumers are unaware of the chemicals to which they may be exposed in everyday products–let alone their possible health effects.

About 700 chemicals are introduced each year, with companies requesting some level of secrecy on 95% of these.
