South Korea’s Samsung and Pattern Energy Group have acquired another large wind project in Ontario for an undisclosed amount.
The partners are buying the 180 megawatt (MW) Armow project from Spain’s Acciona (MCE:ANA).
Earlier this year, they jointly purchased land development rights to expand the previously planned South Kent Wind Farm to 270 MW.
The Armow wind farm is expected to begin construction in 2013 and be completed in 2014. It will use Ontario-made wind turbine components from new Siemens factories in Tillsonburg and Windsor.
In 2009, Samsung signed a Green Energy Investment Agreement with Ontario to establish four manufacturing plants in the province and develop up to 2500 MW of renewable energy projects, while creating about 16,000 direct and indirect renewable energy jobs.
"This acquisition brings us one step closer to our goal of generating clean energy and jobs for generations to come," says Cheol-Woo Lee, Senior Executive Vice President of Samsung C&T Corporation.
Pattern and Samsung recently announced power purchase agreements with the Ontario Power Authority for the Armow project and three additional wind farms. Together, the four projects will supply a total of 870 MW of wind energy, enough to power more than 300,000 homes every year.
The other three projects in Ontario are the 270 MW South Kent Wind project under development in Chatham-Kent, the 270 MW K2 Wind project in the Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh and 150 MW of wind from the Grand Renewable Energy Park, a wind and solar power project under development in Haldimand County.
