New York City is moving closer to installing LED street lamps. The city will begin testing six completely redesigned street lights this year, according to a report on Inhabitat.com.
The city’s Department of Transportation is working with the Office for Visual Interaction to design new street lamps that could reduce the city’s power usage by 25% to 30%, if all 300,000 sodium-bulb lights are replaced.
The LED streetlights are expected to last 60,000 to 70,000 hours and could pay for themselves in two to three years, according to projected costs.
In addition to energy efficiency, the LED streetlights would also offer other significant benefits.
