Nordex USA, Inc., the North American subsidiary of German wind-turbine maker Nordex AG (NDX1.F), announced the completion of its largest American wind project to date, the “Highland” wind farm, built for EverPower Wind Holdings, Inc.
The project connects twenty-five of the company’s N90 2.5-megawatts (MW) high-speed wind turbines to the grid in Pennsylvania. The site is in the southwestern part of the state. A total installed capacity of 62.5 MW means that “Highland” can supply clean electricity to approximately 20,000 households per year, while eliminating 115,000 tons of harmful carbon dioxide emissions.
“Highland” is one of the first wind farms in the country using turbine generators this large. The average size of the turbine generators erected here in 2008 was only 1.7 MW, while all systems installed average a mere 750 kW, Nordex said.
Nordex USA plans to manufacture 2.5-MW turbines at a new facility in Arkansas. Construction of the 115,000 sq. ft. nacelle production in Jonesboro has already begun.
Nordex said it is working on another, larger project with sixty N90 2.5 MW turbines for BP (NYSE: BP) and total effective output of 150 MW.
