Power plant builder and operator MMA Renewable Ventures, LLC, announced plans to build a solar electric system at Global Solar’s thin-film solar manufacturing facility in Tucson, Arizona.
MMA will finance the 750-kilowatt, which will be the first to use Global Solar’s Copper Indium Gallium diSelenide (CIGS) thin-film solar cells. These cells are unique in that they do not contain silicon, which according to Global Solar makes them less expensive to produce.
Global Solar has agreed to purchase the electricity produced from the solar system from MMA for 25 years. the system will be designed and installed by by Solon America Corporation.
Global Solar announced separately that its 35 megawatts plant in Berlin, Germany will open this fall.
