First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR) moved a step closer to beginning construction on the first phase of a massive solar power plant in northern China.
The California-based solar firm signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with China Guangdong Nuclear Solar Energy Development Co., Ltd. (CGN SEDC) to collaborate on the development of the project in Ordos, Inner Mongolia.
The project, which is planned for a total of 2 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, was first announced in September 2009.
The MOU–signed today in Beijing–is for collaboration on the first 30-megawatts (MW) phase of the power plant. Construction on Phase I is scheduled to begin in June 2010, according to an earlier release.
CGN SEDC will be the majority project owner and operator, performing the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) functions for the project. First Solar will supply its thin-film solar PV modules to the project and will support CGN SEDC with EPC and O&M advisory services.
The Chinese government approved the pre-feasibility study for Phase 1 in September 2010.
The Ordos project represents the first large-scale solar collaboration between China and the United States.
