OneWorldWiki

The Mission and Components of OneWorldWiki. The primary mission of OneWorldWiki is to promote human rights, social, economic, and environmental justice and sustainability by educating, engaging, connecting, and empowering people around the world. The major components of OneWorldWiki are:

  • OneWorldWiki Resources - Resources-articles, books, videos, etc.-about Political, Social and Environmental Issues
  • OneWorldWiki Action - Ways to take action to make the world a better place for ourselves and for future generations
  • OneWorldWiki Network - Connect with other people and organizations about the issues that we care about
  • OneWorldWiki Ethical Shopping - Guide to ethical and environmentally-friendly products and services
  • OneWorldWiki Ethical Living - Everyday ways to live which take into account ethics, sustainability and environment
  • OneWorldWiki Inspiration - Ways to inspire us & keep us committed to making the world a better place
  • OneWorldWiki Sustainable Business - Socially-responsible and sustainable business practices and resources
  • OneWorldWiki CleanTech - Guide to Clean Technology and Renewable Energy

The Opportunity. There is a tremendous unmet need for OneWorldWiki due to the convergence of the following factors:

  • A groundswell of interest in "green" issues and grassroots electoral politics
  • Fragmentation of the Internet and online information overload
  • Advent of large and active open-source software communities
  • Growing influence and impact of "Net politics," as well as political instability and disgust with conventional politics
  • Phenomenal growth of online social networking
  • Growing demand that corporations address social and environmental concerns such as poverty and global warming

The Market. There is a large, untapped market for OneWorldWiki, which we estimate to be 15 to 26 million people. Websites that target a comparable audience, such as the Huffington Post and Care2.com, have been able to attract millions of unique visitors per month and $5 to $10 million in annual revenue. The audience for OneWorldWiki will include large communities-of-interest such as "online politicos," environmentalists, human rights activists, women's right activists, gays and lesbians, "conscious consumers," and socially-responsible corporations.

OneWorldWiki Marketing. Due to its mission, content and audience, OneWorldWiki can extensively utilize "cause marketing," which aligns the OneWorldWiki "brand" with issues and causes, as well communities-of-interest.

OneWorldWiki as a Social Venture. In keeping with its mission, OneWorldWiki is organized as a Social Venture, in which entrepreneurial principles are used to organize, create, and manage a venture to create social and political change. OneWorldWiki seeks to generate social and environmental value, as well as financial returns for its stakeholders.

Key Principals. David Comfort, D.Phil., CEO. David has a Doctorate in Biochemistry from Oxford University and a BS in Engineering from the University of Maryland. He was a Post-Doc at UCLA and the investment firm Research Corporation Technologies. David was the CTO of SearchBeat, a search engine, and a bioinformatics scientist with Cognia Corporation and Paracel. David has been a long-time activist and leader in environmentalism, peace, human rights and sustainability.

Jon Murray, President. Jon has a B.S. in Biology from Cal Poly Pomona, and an MBA from Loyola Marymount University. He has extensive business experience in the technology sector with a focus in life sciences and business development. Jon has extensive international business experience and cultural exposure outside the United States.

Business Model. We project that OneWorldWiki will garner approximately 5.0 million unique visitors a month 60 months from launch. By comparison, the Huffington Post had nearly 3.9 million unique visitors and $4 million in annual revenues just 32 months after it launched, whereas Care2.com currently has over 8.2 million members and an estimated $7.9 million in annual revenues in 2007. OneWorldWiki's primary revenue source will be advertising revenue, along with monthly subscriptions (est. 2.5% of monthly visitors). We project that ~10% of our advertising will be targeted, and thus able to command a higher advertising rate, given the targeted nature of the content and audience demographics.

Financing Plan. The present goal of OneWorldWiki is to develop the OneWorldWiki software platform and rapidly build content and functionality. OneWorldWiki intends to raise $1.2 million of seed financing to support software development and expansion. The round of capital is expected to enable positive cash flow by the end of 2009. In 2012, with a projected monthly user base of 5.0 million, OneWorldWiki is projected to gross $28.0 million in annual revenues, with an annualized return on investment of 69%. OneWorldWiki will pursue a second round of $5.0 million financing if needed in 2012.
