A new film that exposes the underbelly of climate change denial has opened in theaters nationwide – Greedy Lying Bastards.
Remember these lines?
We actually have had no significant warming (it’s cooling!).
Carbon is not a pollutant, it makes trees grow better.
The breakup of the ice at the north pole is not unusual.
The science is not settled on this.
It will cost Americans our economy and our freedom.
Filmmaker and activist Craig Rosebraugh and executive producer Daryl Hannah document the impact of the fossil fuel industry putting profits before people, waging a campaign of lies to misinform the public and preventing action to combat climate change, and using its clout to keep regulations at bay and undermining the political process in the US and abroad.
It is filmed in the US, Tuvalu, Peru, England, Uganda, Kenya, Belgium, Germany and Denmark.
The stars of the show are of course, the Koch Bros and ExxonMobil, among others like President GW Bush, VP Dick Cheney, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) who loves to call global warming a hoax.
They are behind a web of heavily funded AstroTurf grass root "community organizations" such as Citizens United, Heartland Institute, Americans for Prosperity, which have been making use of the same tactics used by cigarette manufacturers.
In fact, a new academic study confirms that front groups with longstanding ties to the tobacco industry and the Koch brothers actually planned the formation of the Tea Party movement more than a decade ago, reports deSmog Blog.
Many of the same anti-science operatives that defended cigarettes are now using the same strategies internationally to make sure the fossil fuel industry isn’t held accountable for its role in driving climate disruption.
A similar PBS Frontline special, "Climate of Doubt" aired last October. It was excellent.
