Internet giant Google Inc (Nasdaq: GOOG) is partnering with Energy Inc to create a home energy management system that does not require the installation of a smart meter.
This is good news for homeowners who want to monitor their energy usage, but are not part of the fledgling smart grid pilot programs being developed around the globe.
According to a posting on Google’s corporate blog, homeowners can purchase Energy Inc’s measuring device called TED 5000, and using free software from Google, they can see how and when their home consumes energy.
As reported by Reuters, the partnership is between Google’s philanthropic arm, Google.org, and it is nonexclusive. Google said it will continue to work with utilities to develop the PowerMeter software introduced last February.
