If the U.S. were to adopt renewable energy sources for 100% of its power generation by 2030, the nation would save 97% of the $2.17 trillion price tag over the next 22 years, according to number crunching presented by Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) CEO Eric Schmidt.
As a result, required expenditures would by only $600 billion–less if interest is factored in–according to the report by CNET News (link below) which covered the presentation Schmidt gave at an event called the Corporate EcoForum.
"It’s just a math problem," Schmidt explained to attendees, including sustainability executives from Coca-Cola, Motorola, Clorox, Microsoft and dozens of other companies.
Schmidt said the current climate crisis is a "total failure of political leadership."
He talked about the need to create incentives for businesses to create energy efficiencies and the massive potential for repurposing home computing to manage residential power needs.
The article also highlights Google’s membership in a new group called Climate Savers Computing Initiative, a coalition that hopes to reduce power consumption for computing by 2010.
According to the article, Google is considering investing wave power technology, and has filed a patent on a floating barge of network computers that would be powered by wave energy. Google has already invested in geothermal and solar power.
