France is expected to release details today concerning the construction of the country’s first offshore wind farms. The country delayed its tendering process last September, causing some in the industry to question whether financial issues would scuttle plans.
France has set a target of building 25,000 megawatts (MW) of wind power by 2020–6,000 MW of which is slated to be built offshore at a cost of about 20 billion euros ($27.1 billion).
The French paper Le Figaro reported that the government is looking for a first phase of 3,000 MW by 2015.
French utilities such as EDF (EDF.PA), GDF Suez (GSZ.PA) or EDF Energies Nouvelles (EEN.PA) could submit proposals to operate the wind farms, according to Reuters.
