On Thursday, the White House released plans for cutting the carbon footprint of government agencies by 28% over the next decade.
President Obama issued an executive order last year requiring all federal agencies to devise plans for cutting energy use and reducing environmental impact.
The Federal government occupies nearly 500,000 buildings, operates more than 600,000 vehicles, employs more than 1.8 million civilians, and purchases more than $500 billion per year in goods and services. As the single largest energy consumer in the U.S. economy, the federal government has a big influence with its spending policies and operational procedures.
The plan calls for a wide range of actions–from the installation of solar panels on Army Corps of Engineer dams to eliminating printers and scanners in the State Department.
The plans can be reviewed here.
