Conflict Mounts Over CA Transmission Project

A conflict is playing out in California that is likely to be repeated many times in years ahead, pitting environmental groups and clean energy advocates against one another across the country.

The California Public Utilities Commission is scheduled to vote on a controversial $1.9 billion transmission project that would carry clean, geothermal energy 100 miles from the desert to coastal cities.

The project, known as the Sunrise Powerlink, is being developed by San Diego Gas & Electric, and is an important part of the company’s plan to reach mandated renewable energy goals. But the project has drawn stiff opposition from people who don’t want to see wild lands marred by massive towers and power lines.

In addition, some claim the project is a cover for SDG&E’s parent company Sempra (NYSE: SRE) to use the line to transmit fossil-fuel based power from Mexico.
