Australia Delays Carbon Trading System

Australia has pushed back plans for economy-wide carbon emissions trading until at least 2012.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd came into office with a pledge to create an emissions scheme in 2007, but public support for reducing greenhouse gas emissions has waned, and he has met with tough opposition in parliament.

Legislation to create the trading system was blocked twice in the upper house, and a third rejection is expected to come soon.

Rudd said he will hold to a goal of cutting Australia’s emissions 5% by 2020, but moving forward on a trading system will have to wait until the end of the Kyoto Protocol in 2012 to see where international efforts stand.
