2011 College Sustainability Report Card Released

The Sustainable Endowments Institute published its 2011 College Sustainability Report Card examining the environmental sustainability efforts at colleges and universities with the 300 largest endowments in the US and Canada.

The top institutions receiving an overall "A" grade are: Brown University, Dickinson College, Luther College, University of Minnesota, Oberlin College, Pomona College, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Yale University.

Each school’s overall grade is calculated from the grades received in nine equally weighted categories. A total of 52 indicators are used to evaluate performance within the categories, which are:

  • Administration
  • Climate Change & Energy
  • Food & Recycling
  • Green Building
  • Student Involvement
  • Transportation
  • Endowment Transparency
  • Investment Priorities
  • Shareholder Engagement

Four surveys were designed to gather information about sustainability in campus operations, dining services, endowment investment practices, and student activities.

The complete survey responses are available online, and the Report Card website allows for comparisons between schools.
